It should not lose the scanned channels when you just shut the box off and back on using the converter box remote.
Without turning anything else off, just turn the converter box off for a minute or so and then back on. If that causes the channels to be lost, your converter box is defective.

You can get a simple coaxial switch at Radio Shack or Best Buy (etc.) that will solve that for you.
